Symphony X

Artist Biography by Gary Hill

Michael Romeo formed Symphony X in New Jersey in 1994. The original lineup of the group included Thomas Miller (bass guitar), Rod Tyler (vocals), Jason Rullo (drums), and Michael Pinnella (keyboards). They released their self-titled debut later that same year. The next year they put out the follow-up The Damnation Game. 1995 also saw Tyler leave the group, his replacement coming in the personage of Russell Allen. Their next release came out in 1997. It was the critically acclaimed The Divine Wings of Tragedy. In addition to the critical praise, this disc became the group's biggest commercial success to date. Before recording their next album, Rullo left the band. He was replaced by Thomas Walling. With this lineup, the group released Twilight in Olympus, which garnered both greater critical kudos and greater sales. In a unique turn of events, however, the band faced a new lineup change. Newcomer Walling and bassman Thomas Miller both decided that they were not up to touring for the album. The recently departed Rullo rethought his exodus and came back into the Symphony X fold. Andy DeLuca was brought in on bass for the duration of the tour. After the tour was over, the group found a permanent replacement in Mike LePond. This formation of the group released their fifth album in 2000 -- V: The New Mythology Suite. The following year, Symphony X released their first live album, Live on the Edge of Forever, which captured performances from their 2000 European tour. In 2002, the band continued to mine mythology with their sixth studio album, The Odyssey, which was based on Homer's epic of the same name. They band a bit of a break while its members released solo albums, but came together again in 2007 with the released of Paradise Lost, a concept album based on Milton's tale. Taking a break from mining the past, the band looked to the future for the theme of their next album. The result was 2011's Iconoclast, which featured a darker tone and a cautionary story about machines taking over the world. After a global tour, the band took an extended break. They began working on new material in 2014. Their ninth studio offering, Underworld, was announced in May of 2015. Though not conceptual, it was loosely inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy, particularly its first section, The Inferno. The album was released at the end of July.

The Top Ten Best Symphony X Songs

1The Odyssey - The Odyssey

Absolutely an epic! Rated this songs after dream theater's epics

Whoever did not vote for this song is not a true Symphony X fan! This is an absolute masterpiece and one of my favourite songs ever along with Dream Theater's Octavarium and A Change Of Seasons.

This song has everything you want a song to have, Divine wings of tragedy has some unnecessary parts but this does not.. You listen the song through and you wont ever get bored, prog in its best ways!

This song is ultimately twenty four minutes off epicness.. I gotta say, The Divine Wings Of Tragedy is brilliant, but The Odyssey does it for me.

2Paradise Lost - Paradise Lost

Such a beautiful song where the composition fits the lyrics and theme perfectly

Why the Hollywood Undead album cover?

This song is just incredibly moving. The entire Paradise Lost album is epic!

Paradise Lost, Paradise Lost.. incredible. I love the chorus, its just beautiful

3The Divine Wings of Tragedy - The Divine Wings of Tragedy

Such a hard choice I almost didn't choose. The choir won me over though. Sorry Oddyssey and Paradise lost!

No question their best song. The Odyssey is good, but this has it beat by a wide margin

This song is truly genius. The six and a half minute instrumental section is one of the most ridiculously progressive things they've ever done, and Russell Allen's vocals are at their peak. It should be in the top 5, at least.

How this long epic is not on the list or simply not even number 1 is beyond my understanding? Well, someone has to bring it up. This song = greatest 20 minutes in music!

4Set the World on Fire - Paradise Lost

A Mix of heaviness, beauty and power. I love how they mixed progressive, thrash and power metal in one song. Easily their best.

An excellent mix of a variety of genres. Catchy, heavy, and melodic.

'How to Start an Album'. By Symphony X. Others should learn from this mastery. Best when paired with the epic intro track, 'Oculus Ex Inferni'.

5When All is Lost - Iconoclast

Wow! This song truly shows the diverse nature of Symphony X. It's a gentle ballad, just voice and piano, then gradually builds toa truly epic metal song. Fantastic musicianship, the guitars and keyboards work beautifully, throughout this magnificent piece, Allen's voice is incredible, showing sensitivity and emotion. Easily their best song (yes, even better than their other epic The Odyssey).

From their new album, a beautiful ballad with a really catchy chorus! It rivals the song 'Paradise Lost' in epicness

Symphony X shows how to do it.. Whit every single song
But 'when all is lost' is crown JeWeLL. Much thanks to russell allen and michael romeo.. And the other guys

How can someone not think that this is the greatest song of all time?
Beautiful ballad, backed by a face shredding solo.
Symphony X TRULY outdid themselves this time.
It's going to be next to impossible to create another song like this, in my opinion.

6The Accolade - The Divine Wings of Tragedy

Just simply amazing. I had the same experience listening to this song as I did when I first listened to metropolis part 1 when I was first getting in to dream theater. Simply amazing.

By far, the best prog rock song of all time. I am a huge fan of symphony x, dream theater, circus maximus, opeth, adagio, and star one. This is one of my favorite prog anthems ever.

I Can't believe this song isn't the first one! It's obviously their best one, one of the most epic prog songs all time!

This song captures the essence of fantasy itself without making you cringe, wowing the listener all the way through. One of the greatest metal songs of all time.

7The Edge of Forever - The Damnation Game

Such a beautiful song- from the soft, haunting intro, to the epic chorus, and the amazing guitar solo

8Egypt - V: The New Mythology Suite

This is my favorite song on The New Mythology Suite, that pre-chorus and chorus always gets stuck in my head. This is probably my favorite Symphony X song behind The Odyssey.

Honestly I don't know why this song is so low on this list.

Was nothing less than shocked seeing Egypt so low.
It's one of the best songs I know in Prog Metal

9Communion and the Oracle - V: The New Mythology Suite

Their most complete song

The melodies in this song are insane

My favorite.

10Revelation (Divus Pennae Ex Tragoedia) - Paradise Lost

How the hell is this so low?

The best yet from (almost) the best ever. Only Gamma Ray beat this band for me, and this is SX's greatest song off their greatest album. Yet.

The Contenders

11Legend - Underworld

What the heck? Why is this all the way at the bottom? Come on this song is really good! The chorus is amazing!

Symphony X's musicianship has become outstanding. This is an underrated song. Deserves more people giving it a chance.

12The Walls of Babylon - Paradise Lost

Best one on Paradise Lost. Whatan epic intro

13Through the Looking Glass - Twilight in Olympus

Should be Top 5 Symphomy X song. At least better than the Top 40 Pop Song, 'Without You'.

Top 5 best song from SX, also the best Alice in Wonderland-themed song ever. Allen sings with such emotion and the musical changes make this an epic SX song.

14Children of a Faceless God - Iconoclast

Amazingly epic heavy song with not ONE but TWO shredding guitar solos from Romeo, really catchy chorus too. One of the best Iconoclast songs for sure!

One of my favourites ever! Extremely catchy guitar line

15Without You - Underworld

A great semi-ballad off their upcoming new album, evidence that there has been no drop in quality after a 4-year wait!

I wish I would have written this song! Hands down one of their most beautifully written. Maybe not the most technical, but they're allowed to have some simpler songs in their playbook!

A nice ballad (almost) from Underworld. Nice to hear Russel Allen actually sing again after his five year tenure with Adrenaline Mob.

Great ballad to dedicate a woman!

16Smoke and Mirrors - Twilight in Olympus

Still their best song in my humble opinion, but it is the first song I ever heard of theirs, so probably has something to do with it. It is an excellent song, technically proficient and as written before, the guitar work is their stamp, kind of like the guitar intro from Cowboys From Hell for Pantera, just saying!

The guitar part in this song is one of the most amazing things I've ever heard in my life. The rest of the song is good too.

It's fast and well written, this is Thomas Miller's best song. In my opinion

17Of Sins and Shadows - The Divine Wings of Tragedy
18Charon - Underworld

Very powerful start, great vocals, guitar is amazing(! ).

Love this CD, awesome song here.

19Church of the Machine - Twilight in Olympus

Guitar riffs on this masterpiece, show why Michael Romeo is one of the best!

Should be at least top 10.
Absolutely EPIC!

20Sea of Lies - The Divine Wings of Tragedy

A great place to start for the uninformed Symphony X listener!

From technical point of view is amazing

Romeo's tapping here on the guitar solo is legendary. No tapping has been more melodic than that sus2 major and minor chord successions. It's by far the best symphony x song in terms of technicality and melodicaly

22To Hell and Back - Underworld

Lovin' that keyboard solo.

23Eve of Seduction - Paradise Lost

Spine chilling fretwork diamond perfect. Symphony x roxxx!

24Domination - Paradise Lost

I agree, this song should be in top 10 list easily. Brilliant guitars riff, powerful vocals, aggressive song.

Much better than rated here, in my humble opinion it belongs in the top ten. Guitar work is phenomenal.

26Inferno (Unleash the Fire) - The Odyssey
27Accolade II - The Odyssey

One of their best song and its much better than the accolade

How the hell is this so low? This is one of their best songs.. !

A Truly undderrated masterpiece off the Odyssey album and a great sequel song to the first Accolade, hard to believe it's this damn low on the list, should be up towards the top 15!

Top 10 SX song. Very underrated. I think it rivals The Accolade. Only thing that could make this song better, is if it was twice as long.

28Iconoclast - Iconoclast

This song is so amazing! It's a long epic by the band which is most likely why it is sitting up there on my personal list. It's a beautifully crafted stunning masterpiece

Up there with The Glass Prison, Oblivion and The Grudge as one of my favorite Prog Metal openers

29Candlelight Fantasia - The Divine Wings of Tragedy

This is one of the few favorites for this band. it deserves more attention

This one and lady of the snow stand above the rest

Just voted for this to get it higher

Extremely Underrated!

30The Sacrifice - Paradise Lost

Very underrated song.. it has an awesome feeling and vocal work

32A Fool's Paradise - V - The New Mythology Suite

Best

34The Damnation Game - The Damnation Game
35Evolution (The Grand Design) - V: The New Mythological Suite

This song is so ridiculously good, especially the chorus! The chord progression is really great, and the riffs and solo by Romeo are wicked. Vocal harmonies are also spectacular. I particularly enjoy the ending. I wish the ending was a song of its own.

This song just has the perfect pacing for me. Many tempos fit me at certain times and other times don't suit my mood. This song always gets my blood pumping and lifts me up. 'Here we are, children of sun and star..'

This should be WAY higher, it's got awesome progression and an amazing solo!

36Rediscovery Pt: 2- V: the New Mythology Suite

Why the hell is this one so low on this list, in my opinion, it's one of the most under-rated songs on the V Album.. at least should be on the top 10.

A truly stunning conclusion to a truly brilliant, underrated concept album. Why on earth was this not put on the list? Progressive, epic, emotional, and quintessentially Symphony X, this belongs up there with DWOT and Odyssey.

Easily, Top 10 SX song. It closes the best SX album ever and has enough song changes to make every prog enthusiast ecstatic.

37Out of the Ashes - The Divine Wings of Tragedy

Best song no doubt (H), just because The Divine Wings of Tragedy was launched right after the Liberty Sons (Metal Gear Solid Spin Off) does not mean it is worst than it. The Ashes symbolize the death of Argonian's son by a car accident.

38Awakenings - The Odyssey

nice guitar solo by romeo - one of their best songs

One of their best songs. great guitar solos, brilliant keyboard solo. should be at the top 10

40Seven - Paradise Lost
42Nevermore - Underworld

52?! What?

43Underworld - Underworld

Best song, Definitely at least top 10, song stays strong throughout and has amazing riffs along with powerful choruses

44Bastards of the Machine - Iconoclast

One of the faster songs from the album, it has a cool, groovy keyboard riff, as well as a good vocals.

46King of Terrors - The Odyssey
47Masquerade - Symphony X

Classical masquerade is mystical and powerful

49Fallen - V: The New Mythological Suite

Why are there so few songs from The New Mythology Suite up higher on this list?! It's their best album. This is quite a standout track too, the chorus is mind-blowing

50Orion - The Hunter - Twilight in Olympus

An underrated song, even for Symphony X's standards.
