    When Valkyria Chronicles launched on the PlayStation 3 in 2008, it was a breath of fresh air. Moto x3m bike race games. A solid strategy title bolstered by a lovingly crafted watercolour art style, it was hit with critics, and quickly amassed a reasonably niche, but enthusiastic following. Fans of the original will be quick to recommend Valkyria..

About The Game

Europa, 1930 EC, a continent divided. On one side, the Empire, renowned for its military might. On the other side, the Atlantic Federation. As both forces competed for control, war erupted, inevitably engulfing the entire continent in its aftermath. This was known as the Second Europan War.

Gallia, a small principality lying between the borders of the Empire and the Federation, had struggled to maintain neutrality amidst the fighting, but that all ended when the Empire invaded.

Gallia's resistance stood no chance against the Empire's forces, but just as its capital was about to fall, the leader of the Gallian militia proposed a desperate tactic to catch the Empire by surprise. After the militia's successful operation, the Empire was forced to retreat..

    So my copy arrived today and I've just spent an hour with it. This is the third time I've bought this game; I also own the PS3 original and the recent PC re-release. I thought it worth sharing some first impressions on the PS4 release.
    Visually, the enhancements over the PS3 version seem to be limited to the realm of resolution and framerate. I don't have the setup here to do metrics myself at the moment, but other parties report that the game holds a steady 60fps at 1080p (except during pre-rendered cutscenes which are capped at 30fps). I've certainly not seen anything to refute that myself and this is a big step up on the PS3 original in terms of the sharpness of the image, particularly when it comes to text. There do not appear to be any other visual enhancements beyond the resolution increase.
    This is, therefore, basically a direct transposition of the recent PC re-release and, with one caveat, is functionally identical. That one caveat, however, is that the PC re-release has support for resolutions above 1080p and is, indeed, one of the few games to date where 4k/60fps is practical on single-GPU hardware. There's little else to set the two releases apart, however, and while mouse+keyboard support is in the PC version, this is not a game that emphasises rapid aim and I find a console controller a more comfortable way to play it.
    With the technology stuff out of the way.. the game was one of the finest of the PS3/360 generation and remains superb today. Sega's abject failure to market it outside of Japan still rankles with me. It is not the generic JRPG that many people assumed it was, but is rather (by Firaxis's own admission) the game that inspired the tactical combat in the modern XCom reboots. If you haven't played it, you owe it to yourself to do so and it really makes next to no difference whether you do so on PS4 or PC.

    @Folant Yes.
    Edit: The slightly longer answer - they seem to be the same as the Steam Achievements.

    @Fourfoldroot oh shit, that one slipped under the radar! Great game. Will defo pick up at some point. Getting more and more hopeful that Grandia II and Star Ocean 3 may turn up soon..
    I've picked this up but haven't had a chance to get stuck in yet.

    What does XCOM borrow from Valkyria Chronicles? I love both but I can't think of much they have in common.
    Now that the first game has been ported to everything, how about a new version of the second and third Valkyria Chronicles games?

    My copy arrived today. This is also the third time I've bought this, yet I've still not gotten around to playing it /o At least I got the Steam version on the cheap, I guess.
    I'm determined to actually play this copy, but Overwatch is out in a week, so..
  • Just picked this up, also my third time to own the game and never played past the first three chapters.
    Looking forward to giving it a proper spin.
  • Zero fanfare fit this. Picked it up on PSN today, totally surprised and a great price!
  • Hmm, the 'Remastered' part of this is pretty minimal. Could really have done with a dollop of AA.
    It is a joy to he playing it again.

    @geeza2020 The difficulty curve is gentle for the first few battles, but quickly ramps up. The game eventually settled into a rhythm of three or so moderately challenging missions between each nightmarishly hard milestone battle.
    It is a lot like some of the more hardcore Fire Emblem games in that respect.

  • Unusual feelings from playing a videogame - 'Hey, look it's young people at the start of their lives, third level education, now be subservient and get shot at when told'.
    There's a reason why I don't play military shooters

    @BetterCallPaul In fairness, Valkyria shies away from some of that nasty stuff rather less than the average military shooter.

    The average military shooter stars thirty-something Baldy McStubbleface though.
  • @Rogueywon Oh I know it absolutely does, I just found it a bit disconcerting that my first sniper is quite clearly a teenager (and the perma-death doesn't help).
    Guess I should feel privileged that I'm alive in a time and place that I can sit on my arse and play games.

    Yep, this is it.
    Alicia was a teenaged girl working in a bakery, now she's running about avec a big fuck off rifle getting shot at.

    Indeed. Welcome to Europe circa 1914 or 1939, albeit with more gender equality. And quite possibly welcome to Europe circa 2040, when some technological advance makes the ICBM obsolete.
    We are insanely lucky to live in a time and a place where the mass conscript army is irrelevant.

    I really love the game, but I'm fast coming to terms with the same realisation I made with the PS3 release.
    It's just too damn hard for me.
    It took me multiple tries to get past the third mission, a bloody tutorial, and now I'm properly stuck on Ch3. I really wish there was an easy difficulty as I love the setting, the story, the characters, and the combat system, but I'm just complete shit at it.
    Ty the Immortal can go eat a shit in hell

    So I remember playing this on PC up to a point, but can't remember where.
    There was a mission with two tanks and an alleyway. That was my last one I'm pretty sure. Where was that?

    I really do not remember this game being that hard?
    I completed it on the PS3.
    A giant tank comes to mind as a bit of a difficulty spike but the rest was pretty manageable.

    @PazJohnMitch
    I would say it's me being epically shit at strategy games (which would be true, they are my achilles heel), but I'm finding it several leagues harder than something like Xcom.
  • @SomaticSense Make your city group to contain 4 lancers and one of whatever else to attack approaching baddies.
    Get the river group to contain a sniper, roll the Edelweiss up the hill, keeping Alicia behind it. Face the enemy base with the Edelweiss, take out everyone to the right of it, then shield Alicia to the left and walk her into the base.
    If I recall I ditched the game twice on the following chapter due to the difficulty spike. Not sure why I bought this, it's a barebones remaster and it's a painfully slow game

    We are insanely lucky in the sense that we have (literally) dodged the bullet of conscription, but also one has to question the absolute madness than a few people can weild such power over so many.
    Maybe a WWIII that wipes us out will be a good thing, we are hell bent on our self destruction, dictated by chosen few.

    @SomaticSense
    I found XCom far harder. Although that was probably just because I refused to load a previous save file. (Something I think I did with Valkyria Chronicles).

    From what I remember, I did that one with 1 or 2 lancers, 2 STs and a sniper. Ended up lobbing grenades at the tank that came through the wall after the lancers had gone!
    I think the desert mission has been the first one where squad composition has had an impact. The forest one before it I scraped by with a few retreats and reinforcements.

    The desert one was I think where I abandoned it on PS3. Something I think might happen this time too.
    I do really love it though.

    Get yourself a couple of snipers in there first of all and you'll be fine! Took me about 7-8 turns and did get lucky when all their snipers bunched up when I got closer to their main base which meant it was a simple mortar to take them all out!
